AFL-CIO endorses Kenney bid for Philly mayor

A candidate for Philadelphia mayor has won another major labor endorsement following the city’s teachers union thumbs up earlier this week.  

The AFL-CIO Council of Philadelphia announced its endorsement Wednesday of former City Councilman Jim Kenney for mayor.  Pat Eiding, who heads the group, said the endorsement is more than words, that it will mean support between now and Election Day.

“Every labor person in the city of Philadelphia will have a knock on his door or a phone call or someone in person to talk to them,” Eiding said. “Every house in the city of Philadelphia will have a visit from someone who represents us in one way, fashion or another.”  Following the announcement, Kenney said he was humbled by the support.

“To see and listen to all of these folks who have all the great things they’ve said about me … ” he said. “At one point, I thought they were talking about somebody else.”

 Teamsters Local 107 which is a member of the council and the Carpenters, who aren’t — have broken ranks and have endorsed other candidates.
