Acme to lay off 900 part-time employees

Acme Markets announced today it will lay off about 6 percent of its employees in Philadelphia, South Jersey, Delaware and Maryland. The company closed six stores in our area in January.

The Inquirer reports Acme parent Supervalu is citing declining sales as the reason for letting go 900 of the 117 stores’ 14,000 employees. Layoffs take effect May 7, and will affect part-time employees only.

Editor’s note: The percentage of the number of employees to be laid off has been corrected.
