ACLU: Del. not protecting female inmates

The American Civil Liberties Union says Delaware is failing to protect female inmates from sexual assault.

The ACLU says it is seeking a court order to enforce a 2011 settlement. The group said Thursday that it is seeking a new deadline for state prison officials to make reforms agreed to in the settlement.

The Wilmington News-Journal says the settlement includes reforms at the Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution. They include new staff training, more security cameras and policies requiring two employees be present before entering a cell occupied by only one inmate.

Corrections spokesman John Painter says the department and Baylor staff have worked steadily to meet the goals of the settlement and have significantly improved protections and policies.
