Ackerman employee accused of hiring unqualified son to school district positions

One business day after Arlene Ackerman hired Estelle Matthews as the School District of Philadelphia’s chief talent-development officer, Matthews’ son was hired as an improvement student adviser.

That was 2008. Wednesday, Matthews was escorted out of district headquarters following accusations of nepotism and favoritism.

The Daily News reports Matthews is also being investigated for allegedly giving raises to seven employees — after Ackerman left the district, and without SRC approval. Matthews’ son had since promoted to a $50,000 position, for which he does not meet the degree requirements.
