Abington and Holy Redeemer health systems abandon plan for partnership

In an email sent today, Holy Redeemer Health System announced an end to discussions about a partnership with Abington Health.

The two “have decided to end discussions regarding a potential partnership to create a larger health system,” according to the email. “While we are disappointed, we believe this decision is in the best interest of both organizations.”

When the partnership was announced, area residents and some hospital workers expressed concerns about Abington dropping its abortion and end-of-life services in a merger with the religious Holy Redeemer network. It prompted Abington to release a statement detailing its services.

The statement released today says little else besides the hospitals’ plans to “continue to seek opportunities” to enhance their services.

The WHYY/NewsWorks Health & Science team will have more details on this development as they become available.
