A Yankee fan in Philly

When I came to Philadelphia eight months ago,

the WHYY staff warmly welcomed me. Then, one day, I wore my New York Yankees cap and the smiles turned to frowns.

Understandably. The recent World Series defeat (with the Flyin’ Hawaiian making the final out at Yankee Stadium) was still very raw.

Don’t want to rub it in but I also must stay true to my team. The perfect compromise: My red Yankees cap. No cigar. My colleagues hated that even more.

I’ve been a Yankee fan ever since I was knee-high to a duck. When CBS owned the team, the Yankees game was the only one broadcast on TV down south. Loved listening to Dizzy Dean and Pee Wee Reese call the games and watching with my dad on Saturday afternoons.

No matter where I reside, I know I will always be a fan of the pin stripes

That said, I root for the Phillies…they’re my city’s team. I bought a Phillies cap and wear it often.

I know. I’ll wear my Yankees dark blue tee shirt with the white interlocking NY and my Phillies cap. Oh, the looks I’m gonna get. Stay tuned….
