50 years ago today, John Glenn took flight in a Mercury spacecraft

Everyone knows John Glenn. He went to space, became a senator and went to space again.

But did you today today marks 50 years since the first time he left Earth?
Glenn and fellow astronauts shot into space in the Mercury spacecraft dubbed “Friendship 7”  and orbited the Earth before returning home.

National Constitution Center employee and space collector Ray Katz writes about Glenn’s journey today on the Daily Constitution. There, you’ll leaner just how gutsy Glenn is – he boarded the vessel after first watching several others explode on the launch pad.
