Inquirer: Mayor proposes parking meter rate increase

Jennifer Lin reports that the first phase in Mayor Nutter’s plan to reduce congestion in Center City includes doubling parking meter rates to $2 per hour.  Fines for parking at an expired meter would also increase from $26 to $35. Further, the city would reduce short-term parking rates at strategically located parking garages in an effort to encourage people to park in garages instead of circling for street parking and increasing road congestion.

These changes would only take affect in Center City and University City, while rates in outlying neighborhooods would remain the same.

The bill is currently before City Council for approval.
