2 young women hospitalized after rescued from rip current [video]

Authorities say two swimmers were rushed to a local hospital Monday afternoon after they were pulled from a rip current off a Monmouth County beach.

An Avon-by-the-Sea Police Department spokesperson said the rescue happened at the Garfield Avenue beach. Police didn’t release additional information but said details would be forthcoming. 

Eyewitnesses told WNBC that two young women yelled that they were drowning near a jetty, sparking a response from beachgoers. 

Responding emergency personnel performed CPR, and one girl was not responsive, bystanders told the television station.

Avon-by-the-Sea lifeguards don’t report to full-time duty until June 20. 

Last Friday, two teenage boys rescued three men stuck in a rip current off Seaside Heights. Trisha DeVoe says her son Nikolas, 14, and his friend Thomas Bicurro, 15, pulled the men out of the unguarded water.

“If it was not for their quick and selfless actions and their courage, this story would have been a tragedy instead of one of courage, inspiration, and heroism,” she said.
