17 hurt in Delaware van rollover on I-95, unlicensed driver cited

Police are investigating the crash of a large van on I-95 in Delaware that injured 17 people and snarled morning rush hour traffic. 

The accident occurred in the southbound lanes of the interstate in the Churchman’s Marsh area at about 6:30 Wednesday morning.  The van struck a guardrail and overturned. 

New Castle County paramedics say 17 people were taken to Christiana Hospital for treatment.  Five passengers were treated at the scene for various injuries, and at least three were admitted in serious condition.  None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening. 

Members of a number of fire departments in northern Delaware as well as State Police responded to the accident, which closed several lanes of I-95 in both directions.  

Troopers say the van was carrying workers to a job site in Chesapeake City, Maryland.  The driver, 20-year-old Elisaul Miranda of Philadelphia, was cited for operating the vehicle without a driver’s license, proof of insurance, or registration. 

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.  I-95 was jammed for the morning commute, as were other nearby roads.
