Philabundance manager offers volunteers a good workout

The holiday season is a time to think about giving, not just to family and friends, but to those in need. This week’s guest on Recap thinks about that need year-round, but at this time of year, her work goes into overdrive.

“It’s very, very busy.  We’ve added six extra shifts per week — we usually have 10,” explains Jenny McClay. She’s the repack manager at Philabundance, working with volunteers to sort, pack and distribute the food that arrives at their warehouse.

“There’s a lot of physicality in packaging up 30-pound boxes of food. We drive forklifts and load trucks. Volunteers get a good day’s work in, for sure,” she admits.

Though the urge for giving is greatest in this season, the need continues year-round. On any given day, 100 to 150 volunteers help out at Philabundance, but the staff says there’s always room for more.
