What to do about violent flash mobs in Philadelphia?

We’ll discuss the “flash-mob” youth violence crime wave plaguing the city of Philadelphia, what’s causing it and the city’s official response, which was announced by Mayor Michael Nutter yesterday [Monday Aug. 8]. In it, Mayor Nutter temporarily dropped the curfew from 10 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights for those under the age 18 in Center City and University City, with fines for first offenses. Also targeted are parents of repeat youth offenders of the curfew; their parents will be fined after the first time their child is picked up by police, and will be liable for injuries and vandalism caused by their kids. Joining us in studio are Philadelphia Police Commissioner CHARLES RAMSEY and Dr. CHUCK WILLIAMS, Drexel University education professor and director of the Center for the Prevention of School-Aged Violence. And we’ll hear from EMILY GUENDELSBERGER, an editor at the Onion AV Club whose leg was broken by a crowd of violent youths as she was walking along a Philadelphia street.
