The potentially diminishing role of the School Reform Commission

Listen 00:48:44

Guests: Kevin McCorry, Amy Ruck Kagan, Bill Green, Helen Gym

Last week, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court made a decision that weakened the authority of the School Reform Commission, the state’s governing body of the Philadelphia School District. The new rules could dramatically change the way decisions are made in terms of charter school growth, fiscal allocation, and other major district policies. We begin today’s show by getting a breakdown of the ruling and its implications with KEVIN McCORRY, senior education reporter with WHYY’s NewsWorks. Then, we’ll be joined by Philadelphia City Councilwoman and teacher’s union advocate, HELEN GYM, SRC commissioner BILL GREEN, and by AMY RUCK KAGAN from Philadelphia Charters for Excellence to get their perspectives on the issue.
