The ongoing plight of unaccompanied migrant children

While the flood of young Central American migrants who entered the U.S. this summer has receded, the crisis has not abated. Currently thousands of unaccompanied children from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras are in legal limbo awaiting decisions about their future. Many who escaped violence and poverty at home are suffering from the trauma of their childhoods, their long journeys north and detention when they crossed the border. It is estimated that in Pennsylvania some 500 children under 18 are facing deportation and awaiting hearings in federal immigration court. Joining us to talk about their challenges are CATHI TILLMAN, whose organization LaPuerta Abierta/The Open Door, provides free counseling to Spanish-speaking immigrants, and ELIZABETH YAEGER, staff attorney with HIAS Pennsylvania where she provides legal representation for children in immigration court.
