Is recycling worth it?

Listen 00:48:42

Guests: John Tierney, Ron Gonen and Nina Goodrich

Every day we rinse out our plastic containers, glass jars, and aluminum cans and toss them in the recycling bin. Recycling has become second nature for most of us. But a recent op-ed in the New York Times by science writer JOHN TIERNEY questioned the value of recycling – whether it’s really cost-effective and environmentally beneficial. The article generated some heated response and a number of rebuttals. This hour, is recycling worth it? Guest host Jeff Brady talks this hour with John Tierney and an author on one of those rebuttals, RON GONEN, co-founder and CEO of Closed Loop Fund. Then, with the holidays approaching and the packages starting to pile up – are there ways to reduce all the cardboard, plastic, packing peanuts and bubble wrap? We’ll look at innovations in packaging with NINA GOODRICH, the executive director of GreenBlue and the director of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition.
