    Historian Simon Winchester‘s new book,  Atlantic: Great Sea Battle, Heroic Discoveries, Titanic Storms, and a Vast Ocean of a Million Stories,  is essentially a biography of the Atlantic Ocean — from its geological birth to its great age of shipping and transatlantic travel.   Calling it the “cradle of modern Western civilization”,  Winchester explores its many historical roles and its present and future ecological challenges.
