Ending veteran homelessness

Philadelphia aims to end veteran homelessness by Veterans Day, November 11. The effort, PhillyVetsHome, is a collaboration between the federal government, city agencies and nonprofits to provide housing for the roughly 400 veterans in the city living on the streets and in shelters. Five years ago, President Obama vowed to end veteran homelessness by 2015 and many cities around the country have made great strides toward that goal, but there are remain close to 45,000 veterans sleeping on the streets. This hour, we’ll look at the root causes of veteran homelessness and celebrate some of the successes in ending it. Marty’s guests are KEN WILSON, a veteran who struggled with homelessness for almost two decades and is now a Certified Peer Specialist at Pathways to Housing PA, and DENNIS CULHANE, a professor of social policy at the University of Pennsylvania and the Director of Research, National Center for Homelessness Among Veterans, and QUIL LAWRENCE, an NPR correspondent who covers veterans issues.
