Dolphin Deaths off the East Coast; Cancer Sniffing Dog Research at Penn

Listen

Hour Two

Guests: Robert Schoelkopf, Perry Habecker, and Cindy Otto

Last week, scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced that the morbillivirus is the likely cause of the spike in dolphin deaths off the East Coast. Since July, dozens of dolphins have shown up on the New Jersey coast alone, and scientists and volunteers have been working around the clock to remove and examine these animals. To start off this hour of Radio Times, we speak with BOB SCHOELKOPF of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine and PERRY HABECKER of University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine on their efforts to diagnose the cause of these deaths. Then we’ll take a look at another mammal that has been making headlines: dogs. CINDY OTTO of the Penn Vet Working Dog Center will talk to us about some of the research they have been doing with working dogs, including using their sniffers to detect ovarian cancer in tissues samples.
