What new leadership in China will bring

Listen

Hour 1

Just days after our Presidential election, the Chinese began their process of appointing a new leader. In a meeting that happens every ten years, two thousand delegates are gathered in Beijing for 18th Communist Party Congress, from which the new president will be formally announced — it looks like it will be current vice president Xi Jinping.  In the Great Hall of the People, outgoing President Hu Jinto’s gave his final address, defending his record and warning that corruption in the party threatens China’s stability — in the past year, a number of powerful Communist Party members have been implicated in corruption scandals.  Leading up to the meeting, the Chinese government cracked down on dissent, ramped up security in Beijing and limited internet access.  This hour, we’ll talk about the future of China, the corruption in the communist party, growing social unrest and the possibility of political reform. Marty talks with JACQUES DELISLE, professor of law and political science at the University of Pennsylvania and Director of the Asia Program at the Foreign Policy Research Institute.
