A former day care worker convicted of abducting a 5-year-old girl from her school classroom and sexually assaulting her during a 19-hour ordeal has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison.

Prosecutors said 22-year-old Christina Regusters donned a Muslim dress and veil to impersonate the girl’s mother and take her from Bryant Elementary School in January 2013. The girl was found the next morning half-naked at a playground.

Regusters apologized but said she was not a “monster.” She said her only role had been taking the child from the school and leaving her at the playground.

The girl said “I think what she did to me was wrong and I think she shouldn’t do it to anyone else.”
