Authorities say a woman has died following a shooting involving an off-duty police officer in Asbury Park.

The shooting occurred around 11:30 a.m. today near the corner of Ridge and Sewall avenues. Witnesses reported hearing several shots, and officials said that the woman was taken to a hospital.

At a press conference at the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office this afternoon, a law enforcement official identified the shooter as Neptune Township police Sgt. Phil Seidle.

He is being charged with a variety of crimes, including first-degree murder.

Witnesses said that the shooting occurred after what appeared to be a car chase and subsequent crash.

Authorities said that Seidel and the woman were divorced.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office is leading the investigation.
