Woman dies after shot by ex-husband, an off-duty police officer, in Asbury Park

    Authorities say a woman has died following a shooting involving an off-duty police officer in Asbury Park.

    The shooting occurred around 11:30 a.m. today near the corner of Ridge and Sewall avenues. Witnesses reported hearing several shots, and officials said that the woman was taken to a hospital. 

    At a press conference at the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office this afternoon, a law enforcement official identified the shooter as Neptune Township police Sgt. Phil Seidle. 

    He is being charged with a variety of crimes, including first-degree murder.

    Witnesses said that the shooting occurred after what appeared to be a car chase and subsequent crash.

    Authorities said that Seidel and the woman were divorced.  

    The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office is leading the investigation.
