Wolf mum on whether Pa. will meet budget deadline

Pennsylvania’s Democratic governor isn’t predicting whether the state will have a new budget in place when the coming fiscal year begins in a few weeks.

Gov. Tom Wolf said Monday that negotiators are “trying to get things to the point where we’re not here for a long time this year.”

Both chambers of the Republican-majority Legislature are in session this week as they face weeks of work to develop a spending plan for the year that starts July 1.

Pennsylvania school officials are warning they may need to raise taxes, eliminate programs and cut jobs.

The dispute over the current year’s spending plan dragged on for most of the past year. It was resolved when Wolf let budget legislation become law without his signature in March and April.
