Will they ever repave my street? Maybe! Check out this week’s resurfacing list
As someone who occasionally drinks too much on Thursday evenings, I’ve come to rely on the Philadelphia Streets Department’s Friday morning release of next week’s street repaving schedule, not unlike how I rely on two ibuprofen, a greasy breakfast and strong coffee: It gets me going in the morning.
For this reason alone, I would lament autumn’s inevitable return and the appurtenant end of resurfacing season. Thankfully, we have many weeks of warm weather left, each promising a new list of streets destined for restoration.
As this Streetsplainer describes, to repave a street, it must first be milled, meaning the top layers of asphalt will be stripped off, and after a few weeks the milled street will be repaved. Following paving the surface will be striped with traffic lanes. Some streets can take up to 5 weeks to be resurfaced; so far this year, according to Deputy Commissioner of Transportation Mike Carroll, the wait has been about 8 days. During street reconstruction curb ramps will be upgraded and installed to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
In his budget proposal, Mayor Jim Kenney requested $23.8 million to resurface 55 miles of streets across the city. Last year’s budget of $20.4 million paid for around 85 miles of street resurfacing. As of 2014, 900 miles of Philadelphia’s 2,575 miles of city-maintained streets were on the Streets Department’s paving backlog.
