Weekend News Briefs: 7/9 – 7/11

Saturday — A Castor Gardens family escaped uninjured from a home invasion Saturday morning. Three men entered a home on the 1200-block of Fanshawe Street, where the suspects tied the family up and demanded money.

It’s unclear how much money the men got, if any, but they did leave with the family’s Honda Civic. There’s been no word of an arrest.

— An 11-year-old girl and her foster mother were hospitalized Saturday afternoon after being hit by a car in Wissinoming. According to reports, the girl and her mother, 45, were walking near Harbison Avenue and Glenloch Street when a vehicle traveling north on Harbison hit them.

The driver stopped at the scene, and the mother and daughter were transported to the hospital, where the daughter was treated for non-life threatening injuries and the mother remains in critical condition.

Sunday — The owner of a car involved in a hit-and-run accident Sunday morning is being questioned by police. The car, a black Ford Taurus, struck a woman on her bicycle around 12:30 yesterday morning in Frankford. The woman, 41,  was struck around Torresdale and Adams aveneues, and was transported to Hahnemann Hospital where she died of her injuries. Police recovered the vehicle on the 2100-block of Gillingham Street. UPDATE: Thirty-nine-year-old Manuel Albandoz has been arrested and charged with homicide, DUI, leaving the scene and other charges.

A man was rushed to Aria Health-Torresdale yesterday afternoon after falling off a WaveRunner in the Delaware River. The unconscious 40-year-old man was pulled from the water around 3:30 p.m. near Linden and Delaware avenues in East Torresdale. Police are unsure what cause the accident.
