Video: Partially demolished bridge in Great Egg Harbor Bay catches fire

Firefighters battled a bridge fire early this evening in South Jersey.

A portion of the partially demolished Beesley’s Point Bridge, once spanning the Great Egg Harbor Bay and connecting Atlantic and Cape May counties, ignited shortly before sunset.

In videos and photos posted on Facebook, a barge with a crane is seen next to the fire site. A fire chief told the Press of Atlantic City that the old toll booth was burning.

Fire boats responded to the scene since access is impossible from land.

It was not immediately known if there were any injuries. Authorities have not yet released the cause.

The bridge segment runs parallel to the Garden State Parkway. Completed in 1928, the bridge closed in 2004 due to structural problems

Demolition of the remainder of the bridge is ongoing.
