Firefighters battled a bridge fire early this evening in South Jersey.
A portion of the partially demolished Beesley’s Point Bridge, once spanning the Great Egg Harbor Bay and connecting Atlantic and Cape May counties, ignited shortly before sunset.
Fire boats responded to the scene since access is impossible from land.
It was not immediately known if there were any injuries. Authorities have not yet released the cause.
The bridge segment runs parallel to the Garden State Parkway. Completed in 1928, the bridge closed in 2004 due to structural problems.
Demolition of the remainder of the bridge is ongoing.
