USOC: Philly gyro stand must change name
A Philadelphia gyro stand says it’s not going to go 12 rounds with the United States Olympic Committee.
The USOC has demanded Olympic Gyro change its name. The longtime stand in Philadelphia’s historic Reading Terminal Market has also been ordered to stop using the interlocked-rings logo familiar to sports fans everywhere.
The notice Athens Voulgaridis received last month says the USOC owns the rights to the word Olympic under a 1978 law.
Voulgaridis tells the Philadelphia Daily News it’s wrong the USOC controls a word that’s been around forever but he’s not going to fight for the name the family has used since 1984.
The USOC has approved renaming the stand Olympia Gyro. The committee says it’s protecting the rights of companies that financially support the U.S. Olympic team.
