UD launches car sharing option on campus

Car sharing firm Zipcar will provide four cars for short-term rent at the Newark campus.

The University of Delaware has launched a new partnership with Zipcar Inc. to provide the campus with a new transportation option that’s designed to be more cost-effective and convenient.

Available to students, faculty and staff members affiliated with the university, Zipcar rates start at$8 per hour and $66 per day.  This new transportation option is also available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The program is intended to take 15 to 20 privately owned vehicles off the road and reduce high parking demand.  Matthew Malloy, vice president of global university operations at Zipcar, says it will also “give students who don’t have access to a car the freedom and flexibility to participate in off-campus activities like internships and job interviews.”

“At the same time, students and faculty members alike can be proud that they are reducing their environmental impact by lowering their carbon footprint and using alternative transportation methods like car-sharing,” Malloy adds.

Zipcars will be located in high-demand areas along the campus. Four vehicles, two Toyota Prius and two Scion xB, will be located at Lot 34 Morris Library and Lot 9-2 Thomas McKean Hall.
