Here’s a look at stories we’ll be covering in Northwest Philadelphia this upcoming week:
1. Middle- and high-school graduation-ceremony galleries
As commencement season kicks into full force in Northwest Philadelphia, NewsWorks will post photo galleries from graduation events at Greene Street Friends School and Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. A full list of local events can be found via this link.
2. Fire Safety and Prevention Day event in East Falls
On Saturday, Engine 35, Ladder 25 and Medic 16 hosted a Fire Safety and Prevention community day at 4208 Ridge Ave. The Phillie Phanatic was scheduled to attend. Educational events/offerings (like a “smoke trailer”) and the chance for kids to meet “Sparky the Fire Prevention Mascot” and wear fire gear were also on the agenda.
3. Trial begins in death of off-duty police officer
The trial of Kareem Alleyne, who is charged with involuntary manslaughter and homicide by vehicle, will begin with jury selection on Monday. The prosecution is expected to argue that Philadelphia Police Officer Mark Brady was intentionally struck by a car driven by Alleyne while the former was on bicycle in Mt. Airy.
4. The World Cup is upon us
On Thursday, the World Cup soccer championships begin across Brazil. Thirty-two teams will vie for a title that many players dream of from their youth. Interest is high locally among those with roots in countries represented in the tournament as well as Americans who hope against hope that the U.S. men’s national team can make a memorable run. We’ll look into where these different fan bases congregate in the city to cheer on their teams. Check back for several stories in advance of the games.
