Toms River seniors targeted in Social Security scam

The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs is putting seniors and their families on notice after reports of a Social Security scam targeting seniors in Toms River.

Toms River Patch directed us to this alert from the DCA, which says seniors have been receiving calls informing them of a purported new law requiring Social Security recipients to use a new type of card. The caller then proceeds to list banks and check numbers asking the seniors to identify theirs.

Aside from calling their banks and police to alert them of the scam, residents are asked to call the DCA to report the incident at 800-242-5846
