‘Toleration’ statue overlooks Wissahickon Creek

Built in 1883, the statue overlooking Wissahickon Creek depicts a man, who is commonly assumed to be William Penn, dressed in Quaker clothes bearing the inscription “Toleration.”

According to a trail map published by the Friends of the Wissahickon, the rock that the statue stands upon is known as Mom Rinker’s Rock.

In legends, Mom Rinker is depicted both as a witch and a “Revolutionary patriot who dropped balls of yarn containing messages about British troops to colonial soldiers waiting below.”
