St. Joseph’s University history professor Randall Miller.

Miller: The Controller of all offices is probably at the bottom of the radar screen for most voters even though ironically it’s one of the most important offices in city government – indeed in any government. And in these difficult times where we’re worrying about how we’re going to make ends meet and where we’re going to get money and all kinds of concerns about tax collection and allocation of funds, it’s actually a race of vital importance.

Miller says the media is publicizing the race, which could help challenger Republican Al Schmidt get his name out.

Still, Miller says it’s unlikely incumbent City Controller Alan Butkovitz will lose because he has strong Democratic organization and registration numbers on his side.
