Terror suspect, ‘Jihad Jane’ recruiter avoids extradition
An Algerian-born terror suspect has walked free from a Dublin court after winning a two-year legal battle to avoid being extradited to the United States.
U.S. authorities had hoped to convict Ali Charaf Damache on two counts of conspiring to develop a European terror cell and to aid Pakistan-based terrorists. He had been held without bail in Ireland since March 2013 pending Thursday’s Dublin High Court ruling that freed the 50-year-old Irish citizen.
Justice Aileen Donnelly ruled that Irish state prosecutors erred in ruling out the possibility of trying Damache for the terror charges in Ireland rather than the United States.
Two American women allegedly recruited by Damache to his terror cell, including one who used the online profile “Jihad Jane,” have been convicted on U.S. terror charges and imprisoned.
