Authorities have recovered the body of the 17-year-old free diver who disappeared yesterday afternoon in the Shark River Inlet.

The boy’s body was found this morning under a bridge over the inlet, Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty tells NJ 101.5

“It’s a tragic situation for all the people who come to Belmar and the Jersey Shore. It’s rare for something like this to happen. It’s really unfortunate and terrible for his family,” Doherty said to the radio station.

The Westfield teenager was reported missing around 5 p.m. yesterday after he went free diving, which doesn’t involve SCUBA gear, in the inlet that divides Belmar and Avon in Monmouth County.
