University of Delaware Police have arrested a 20-year-old New Castle man they say opened fire at the basketball courts on the school’s Laird Campus in Newark.

Brandon Fletcher now faces four counts of first degree reckless endangering, plus charges of aggravated menacing, and criminal mischief among other charges.  UD Police say he started shooting a gun he grabbed from a car following a fight at the courts just before 11 p.m. August 19.

Police used the UD’s campus-wide video surveillance system to track and identify Fletcher as the suspected shooter.  “The investment the university has made in such public safety technology enhancements over the past few years greatly enhanced our ability to resolve this case,” said UD Police Chief Patrick Ogden.  “We were able to identify strong leads immediately.”

Fletcher was committed to Wilmington’s Young Correctional Facility on $1.4 million cash bail.  He was also issued a no contact order with the University and an unconditional trespass warning.
