State of emergency for Delaware beaches includes mandatory evacuations

Del. Gov. Jack Markell has declared a state of emergency in the First State, effective 6 p.m. Thursday.

As part of that declaration, visitors are to evacuate all beaches.

“They should leave tonight if they can,” Markell told WHYY/NewsWorks’ Mark Eichmann during a media conference call.

The University of Delaware has postponed its student move-ins scheduled for this weekend and airmen at the Dover Airforce Base are preparing for Hurricane Irene with emergency operations and drills.
