St. Joseph’s University appoints interim president

More than a month after St. Joseph’s University announced it would have to replace the man they’d tapped to fill in as university president, the school has named an interim leader. Senior Vice President John Smithson will assume the role temporarily.

When Rev. Timothy Lannon announced his departure to Creighton University, Rev. Joseph O’Keefe of Boston College was named as Lannon’s replacement, and was set to take over May 18. But health problems have limited O’Keefe, and in March, he revealed a heart condition would prevent him from accepting the St. Joe’s job.

Smithson will take over May 18, the Associated Press reports, until the position is filled.
