Two Spring Lake police officers jumped into the frigid Spring Lake this morning to rescue a fisherman whose boat capsized during a fishing tournament

Patrolmen Emmett Smith and William Kelly quickly took action by swimming to the man who was tossed into the frigid lake, according to a release from the Spring Lake Police Department.

The officers then assisted the man to shore.

The Spring Lake First Aid Squad evaluated the men, determining that they were in good health, police said.

“Nice job to both officers, and we are happy the boater is safe,” the release said. “Everyone try to get warm!”

Today is the opening day of trout season in New Jersey.
