The speed limit on a stretch of road near the Dover Air Force Base in Dover will increase next week.

The speed limit on Del. 1 between Trap Shooters Road and the Puncheon Run Connector will increase from 55 mph to 60 mph.

Delaware’s Department of Transportation made the decision after conducting a traffic study that found motorists were driving at various speeds. Greg Layton, a spokesperson for DelDOT, said the increase will make the road safer.

“We’ve discovered traffic was already traveling faster than 55 mph. We evaluated the safety, and as a transition from the 55 mph to the 60 mph, we thought it was a smooth transition and it avoids people driving at different speeds,” he said. “Some people were driving the speed limit and some people were driving slightly over the speed limit, so we think this will make a more smooth traffic flow.”

The speed limit also will increase to 60 miles per hour along the Puncheon Run Connector between routes U.S. 13 and 1.
