It began as a routine traffic stop.

Ocean Township Police Department Capt. Michael Resetar stopped an erratic motorist on Deal Road in the Monmouth County municipality early Wednesday afternoon, said Det. Lt. Kevin L. Faller.

The motorist told Resetar that he was rushing his wife to a hospital because she was in labor.

But the baby would not wait.

As officers awaited the local first aid squad, the woman began giving birth.

Moments later, in the back seat of the couple’s car, Oakhurst First Aid Squad member Judith Brown and officers Alisa Martinez and Christoper Brady helped deliver the baby girl, Faller said.

The Oakhurst First Aid Squad then transported the mother and her newborn to Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch.
