South Jersey towns find economy and entertainment through arts events

What do Hammonton, Pitman and Collingswood have in common? Besides being South Jersey municipalities, they’re also all finding their footing in the arts scene, hosting Third Thursday, Fourth Friday and Second Saturday, respectively.

The three are among towns around South Jersey using their galleries, theaters and boutiques to draw visitors and bolster the economy. Peter Crimmins visited Hammonton last week, where competitors went stroke-for-stroke for $100 as they painted outdoor scenes during a four-hour stretch.

Hammonton is taking it up a notch with a new location and plans for a youth academy, open studios tour and artist residences.
