South Jersey couple guilty of exploiting Kenyan woman for domestic labor

A New Jersey couple has been convicted of bringing a Kenyan woman to the United States and exploiting her for domestic labor.

A federal jury on Tuesday found 53-year-old Michael Wood and his 45-year-old wife, Mary, guilty of alien harboring for financial gain and conspiracy. Mary Wood was also convicted of fraudulently obtaining naturalization as a U.S. citizen by falsely denying involvement in the scheme, but was acquitted of making false statements in connection with the investigation.

The Mullica Hill couple will be sentenced Sept. 7. Michael Wood faces up to 10 years in prison, while his wife could get up to 20 years.

Prosecutors say they forced the woman to clean their house, do the laundry, cook and care for their four children. She was paid $200 a month.
