Shore town hard-hit by Sandy sees taxes rise
Taxes are creeping up in some Jersey Shore towns that were hit hard by Superstorm Sandy.
But even with less storm relief aid available this year, none of the towns have proposed or approved an exorbitant increase in property taxes.
The average municipal tax bill in Mantoloking, which saw nearly all 521 of its homes damaged or destroyed in the storm, will rise by 31 percent this year.
But that’s mainly because waves of storm aid last year helped the borough actually lower its taxes temporarily.
Toms River is getting $5 million less in storm aid this year, and its taxes are going up an average of 7 percent.
Other Sandy-affected towns are faring better with their budgets, with small tax increases in line with previous years.
