Sheriff’s Office

As if the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office isn’t facing enough problems, it’s now being stripped of some of the few responsibilities it had to begin with.

The Philadelphia Metro reports the city is starting a pilot program transferring some prisoner transportation to the prison system.  City officials say it’s meant to cut down on overtime costs and to allow Sheriff’s Officers to focus on “zone-courtroom presence.”

The article notes that while the candidate to replace Sheriff John Green is trying to abolish the office, there is reportedly little political appetite to change the city charter, which guarantees the existence of the office.
