Snowstorm brings school closings, SEPTA delays, PPA parking discounts

    Conditions in and around Philadelphia are quickly deteriorating as a weather system bringing an estimated 8 to 12 inches of snow bears down on the northeast.

    Mayor Michael Nutter is urging people to use extreme caution. He said all cars must be moved from snow routes by 4 p.m. Tuesday, when a snow emergency goes into effect.

    The National Weather Service predicts the storm could drop 8 to 12 inches of snow on Philadelphia followed by bitterly cold temperatures Wednesday.

    SchoolsPhiladelphia public and parochial schools have announced that schools will be closed on Wednesday. Check NBC10 for ongoing updates.

    SEPTASEPTA is experiencing an earlier than normal rush hour on all regional rail lines and warns that many trains will be filled to capacity. Riders can expect delays of up to 30 – 45 minutes on rail and up to an hour on some bus routes.

    There will be no overnight bus service. Instead trains on the Broad Street and Market-Frankford lines will run every 20 minutes from midnight to 5 a.m. Wednesday, reports NBC10.

    Route 35 has been suspended due to current weather conditions and Route 204 is operating with up to an hour delay.

    PPA Parking DiscountsThe Philadelphia Parking Authority announced that it will enforce all parking regulations during the snow emergency, but is offering a flat $5.00 parking rate for select garages in the Center City area.

    Beginning at 5:00 p.m. today the following garages will charge a flat rate for each 24 hour period until the end of the current snowstorm emergency:

    To receive the discounted $5 rate, customers must bring their tickets to the PPA Management Office in each garage.

    Flyers GameTonight’s game between the Philadelphia Flyers and Carolina Hurricanes at the Wells Fargo Center has been postponed due to the snow emergency. A makeup date will be announced as soon as it can be confirmed.

    Snow Emergency RoutesDuring a ‘Snow Emergency’ all parked cars must be moved from emergency routes for plowing. Cars should be parked as far from the corner of the street as possible to make room for plowing equipment.
