Salt pile collapse kills man in Bucks Co.

A man has been killed after the heavy machine he was operating was crushed under a large pile of salt at a suburban Philadelphia landfill.

The industrial accident happened around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Grows North Landfill at New Ford Mill Road and Bordentown Road in Morrisville, Bucks County, Pa., county dispatchers told NBC10.

Officials say the man was operating a “salt machine” when a 100-foot tall pile of salt toppled over, burying the machine and trapping the man inside.

Several emergency crews were dispatched to the scene in an attempt to rescue the man, but he could not be saved.

The man’s death comes as many Southeastern Pa. municipalities and state road crews prepare to deal with a winter storm that will bring several inches of snow and frigid temperatures.

Officials have not released the name or age of the victim.

NBC10 is continuing to follow this developing story and will update the story as more details become available.
