Roxborough’s 12th annual Mother’s Day Walk/Run is Sunday
A Mother’s Day walk/run for breast cancer and is happening right in the heart of Roxborough this weekend.
“Our event brings family and friends of all ages together bright and early on Mother’s Day morning to celebrate moms and woman everywhere,” said Jackie Ashenfelter, coordinator of the event.
The event is being organized by Ashenfelter and Maureen Pownall in partnership with Journey’s Way in Roxborough.
“The walk started back in 2001 when a few members of my exercise class from Kendrick Rec Center wanted to stay local and walk Valley Green, but still support the Susan G. Komen Foundation,” said Ashenfelter.
She says the benefits of the event are staying closer to home on Mother’s Day and still being able to support those who are battling breast cancer.
Although the first event was host to only 25 people, this Sunday the duo is expecting over 400 people.
“Our goal this year is to raise more than $10,000 for Friends Helping Friends with Breast Cancer, which is a local non-profit organization helping breast cancer patients in the community, and the Susan G Komen Foundation,” said Ashenfelter.
The route is approximately five miles and starts at Journey’s Way at 403 Rector St., goes through Forbidden Drive to Valley Green and ends back at Journey’s Way. There will also be a half mile mini-walk that will consist of two loops around the Kendrick Recreation Center.
Activities for the day include a pre-workout warm-up at 7:45 a.m. and door prizes for first place runners and walkers.
Pre-registration for the event, which runs through May 9, is $20 for adults and $10 for children ages 10 to 17. Day of registration is available for $25.
