Right NEast/Wrong NEast: WHYY needs a geography lesson
WHYY is starting its own hyperlocal web publication. For the Northwest. But they could still use a little help with the Northeast geography.
Because Port Richmond is definitely not Northeast — note the 19134 zip code and the south-of-the-Frankford-Creek-location.
But in this report Tuesday about the Gulf Coast oil spill affecting other regions, WHYY visits two Port Richmond bars that the news outlet says are in the Northeast.
Kudos to WHYY for visiting Byrne’s Tavern at Richmond and Westmoreland streets and Bonk’s Bar at Richmond and Tioga streets rather than an over-exposed trendy seafood restaurant, but if the aim was to give the Northeast some coverage, WHYY missed its target.
Outside media don’t care about the Northeast. We have all seen them misuse, misspell and mistake our neighborhoods and our streets, so we at NEast Philly wanted to do something about it. When they get it wrong, we set it right in a segment we like to call Right NEast/Wrong NEast.
WHYY is your source for fact-based, in-depth journalism and information. As a nonprofit organization, we rely on financial support from readers like you. Please give today.
