Right NEast/Wrong NEast: St. Dom’s is back in Frankford

This one brings us back.

For those of you who’ve been reading NEast Philly since it’s infancy, we started Right NEast/Wrong NEast back in February 2009 — about a year after we launched the site. And our very first RNWN was about a WHYY blog post that reported St. Dominic Parish as being in Frankford. Even though there are Upper Holmesburg neighborhood flags waving proudly in front of the school.

Never one for geographic accuracy, the Inquirer last week made the exact same mistake:

“In August, seventh grader Josh Sainta and his sister Zephariah, a fourth grader, were ready to begin classes at St. Dominic’s, a Catholic elementary school in Frankford.”

Mind you, that’s the very first sentence of the article.

Sadly, Action News (Nov. 8, 2010), NBC10 (July 14, 2010) and Fox29 (June 1, 2009) are all guilty of this error. We’d like to take this opportunity to remind the mainstream media that Homlesburg, Mayfair and Wissinoming are also on Frankford Avenue, and separate Upper Holmesburg from Frankford. Just in case they’ve misplaced their maps.

Full disclosure: NEast Philly and WHYY have worked together on projects and WHYY apologized for and corrected the mistake when we pointed it out to them back in February 2009.
