Report: Philadelphia lost independent restaurants in past year

With new gatropubs popping up all the time, this news about Philadelphia’s restaurant scene may seem a bit counter-intuitive: The number of independent restaurants in Philadelphia and its suburbs is actually falling.

The Philadelphia Business Journal reports a annual drop of 126, or about 1 percent. Chain restaurants actually grew, to 5,848 from 5799.

According to yearly NPD Group report, that makes for a total of 16,120 restaurants in the Philadelphia region, up 77 from the previous March 31.
