Fisherman witnesses whale grieving death of young calf

A local fisherman witnessed something few ever get to see on a regular basis after he noticed a whale who appeared to be greiving the death of her young calf.

According to a story from Delaware online, a local fisherman in Ocean City, Maryland saw a mother pilot whale support her calf up above water for more than eight hours as it appears she was trying to get the young whale to breathe.

Sylvain Cote tells Delaware Online he was 62 nautical miles off Ocean City when he witnessed the whale holding the young calf above water.

Cote says he saw as many as 12 other pilot whales surrounding the mother and her calf.

Experts say young whales are often brought to the surface for their first breath of air by their mothers, according to the report.
